Construction has started on the Merrifield business park.

CONSTRUCTION of a $1.2 billion commercial precinct set to create more than 20,000 jobs has begun in Melbourne’s north.

Premier Daniel Andrews attended the launch of the Merrifield business park in Mickleham this morning, a 300ha site expected to generate up to $3.5 billion a year for the state’s economy.

Paint giant Dulux is the first company to invest with a $165 million factory to be built.

Merrifield, a joint venture between MAB Corporation and Gibson Property Construction, is Victoria’s largest master planned mixed-use development.

Mr Andrews said it was the “best example” of a property integrated master development in any state.

“This is an outstanding example of what can be achieved if, instead of just talking about development, we actually plan for the future,” he said.

“It’s the sort of planning, sort of development that makes sense.

“This is the sort of visionary planning that we need to see more of.”

The business precinct is expected to create up to 20,000 indirect jobs once complete, as well as almost 7000 jobs during construction.

MAB managing director Andrew Buxton said there was obvious value in having a range of services in the one area.

“This will allow the opportunity for Australian businesses, big or small, to establish here over the next 20 years,” he said.

“This place is going to be the epicentre of the north.

“Merrifield is going to offer every amenity from the cradle to the grave.”

He said they were working with the government to establish the potential of a tertiary institution in Merrifield.

Hume Mayor Adem Atmaca said the development was important for Hume and would be a “driver of opportunity” for residents into the future.
