Recent expansions to the Urban Growth Boundary are reflecting a shift in Melbourne’s growth patterns towards the west and north of the city. The city of Whittlesea is projected to grow to almost 300,000 residents by 2031, well beyond previous government forecasts. This growth has forced the implementation of many newly proposed transport projects which will effectively upgrade and improve the transportation linkages to and around the North. The first of which is the $21.8 million Plenty Road duplication that has now been completed with two lanes of traffic now available for the community of South Morang.
The 2.4 km duplication from Gordons Rd to Riverdale Boulevard also includes bicycle lanes and bus priority lanes to improve alternative transport connections in the North.
The upgrade also allows for future traffic growth with the wide central median able to accommodate a third lane each way if needed in future years.
The RACV have also proposed some additional upgrades as part of their “Growing Pains” scheme. Below is a list of their proposed transport projects, which will immediately benefit residents of South Morang.
